Inhalational anaesthetics in neurosurgery

Article 1994 EN

Volatile anaesthetics have a direct vasodilating effect and lower the metabolism in the brain. The net result is a generally reduced cerebral blood flow. Despite a lack of direct action on the cerebral arteries, nitrous oxide increases cerebral blood flow and metabolism, effects which may not always be counteracted by addition of other anaesthetics.
